This condition results in looseness of the couplings spline engagement which may promote a fretting corrosion failure of the splines. This could cause a loss of steering control.

On certain vehicles, the automatic transmission may have a steering column gear shift tube improperly secured to the gear shift lever housing, due to the omission of an assembly staking operation. When built to specification, the gear shift tube is staked & retained with a set screw at the upper portion of the steering column jacket. A tube which is retained only by a set screw may drop as the result of the screw loosening in service.
