2019 Freightliner Cascadia Recall

On certain trucks, the joint connecting the steering arm to the drag link may not have been properly tightened. As a result, the joint could loosen and separate, causing a loss of steering control.

A loss of steering control could create the risk of a crash.

Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a DTNA authorized service facility to inspect the castle nut on the drag link taper joint. The nut will be checked for the correct torque, and tightened or repaired, as necessary.

On certain trucks, the brake modulator valves could corrode. As a result, the brakes on one wheel could fully apply when the roll stability control system activates. If this happens, there could be a brake pull that can cause the truck to change direction. Note: This problem does not affect the service brakes.

A brake pull that causes the vehicle to change direction suddenly can increase the risk of crash.

If this happens, there could be a brake pull that can cause the truck to change direction. Note: This problem does not affect the regular service brakes.

On certain trucks built with aluminum battery cables, the terminal that attaches the battery cable to the frame may break. If this happens, there could be a loss of electrical power and the engine could shut off suddenly.

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a DTNA authorized service facility to inspect the battery cables for corrosion and/or damage. They will be repaired or replaced with copper cables, as necessary.

On certain trucks, if the headlamp bulb is replaced and not properly installed, it could move and contact other parts inside the headlamp.

A headlight bulb that touches other parts could cause the headlamp to melt or catch fire.

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a DTNA authorized service facility to modify the headlamp assembly and inner fender to assist with headlamp bulb replacement. A warning label/sticker will also be installed.

On certain trucks equipped with an Eaton automated manual transmission and electronic clutch actuator (ECA), a component within the clutch assembly could fail. If this happens, the broken clutch components could prevent the transmission from disengaging or shifting to neutral. This could result in unintended vehicle movement, even if the parking brake is applied. Note: This recall replaces FL-803 (Transport Canada recall 2018-714). Trucks that were repaired under that recall also require this repair.

Sudden and unexpected movement of the vehicle could create a risk of injury or a crash.

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a DTNA authorized service facility to replace the clutch and update the transmission software.

On certain trucks, the brake lights may stay on after the brake pedal is released.

Brake lights that stay on could cause other road users not to recognize when the truck is braking. This could increase the risk of a crash.

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a DTNA authorized service facility to replace the 3-pin brake pressure switch with a 2-pin switch. A jumper harness will also be added. For vehicles equipped with a Cummins engine, the final repair has not yet been finalized. As an interim repair, the 3-pin brake pressure switch will be replaced with a new 3-pin brake pressure switch. A follow up notice will be sent to those owners when the final repair is available.

On certain trucks, the brake modulator valves could corrode. As a result, the brakes on one side of the vehicle may be slow to release after an automatic braking event. If this happens, there could be a brake pull that can cause the truck to change direction. Note: This problem does not affect the regular service brakes.

On certain trucks equipped with "Fleet Engineer" mud flaps, the bracket for the mud flaps may partially cover the rear reflective tape. Canadian regulations require that reflective tape must be visible on the rear of the truck.

Reflective tape that is covered may make the truck less visible to others and could create an increased risk of a crash.

Daimler Trucks of North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to an authorized DTNA Service Facility to inspect the reflective tape. It will be moved as necessary to meet the regulations.

On certain trucks equipped with air disc brakes, the brake caliper mounting bolts may not be properly tightened. This could cause the caliper bolts to loosen and result in reduced brake effectiveness.

Reduced brake effectiveness could cause an increase in stopping distance and create the risk of a crash.

The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their truck to an authorized Daimler Trucks of North America Service Facility to inspect and replace the brake caliper bolts as necessary.

On certain trucks equipped with air disc brakes, the brake caliper mounting bolts may not be properly tightened. This could cause the caliper bolts to loosen and result in reduced brake effectiveness.

Reduced brake effectiveness could cause an increase in stopping distance and create the risk of a crash.

The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their truck to an authorized Daimler Trucks of North America Service Facility to inspect and replace the brake caliper bolts as necessary.

On certain vehicles, the driver-front airbag could deploy without warning.

An airbag that deploys without a crash could create a risk of injury. It could also increase the risk of a crash.

The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a Daimler Trucks North America Authorized Service Facility to install a new airbag wiring harness and clockspring. Note: This supersedes recall 2018-624. Trucks that were fixed require a second repair under this recall.

On certain vehicles, the bolts that join the steering and tie rod arm to the steering knuckle may not have been properly tightened. This could lead to a separation of the tie rod arm and cause a loss of steering control. This could create a risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Daimler Trucks North America Authorized Service Facilities will inspect the steering and tie rod arm bolts to ensure they are torqued correctly and install new fasteners as necessary.

A failure of this component (steering) may increase the risk of a crash or injury.

This recall was replaced by Transport Canada Recall No. 2020-488. On certain vehicles equipped with an Eaton automated manual transmission and electronic clutch actuator (ECA), an internal component within the clutch assembly may have been manufactured improperly and could fail. If this occurs, the broken clutch components could prevent the transmission from disengaging or shifting to neutral. This could result in unintended vehicle movement, even if the parking brake is applied, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Daimler Trucks of North America Authorized Service Facilities will recalibrate the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and replace components as necessary.

On certain vehicles, the driver’s airbag could deploy without warning due to a problem with the steering wheel clockspring. An unintended airbag deployment could create a risk of injury to the driver and increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Daimler Trucks North America Authorized Service Facilities will inspect the clockspring and repair as necessary. Note: This recall is superseded by recall 2019054 (Daimler recall FL-806). Please see recall 2019054 for more information.

On certain vehicles equipped with air disc brakes, the brake caliper mounting bolts may be incorrectly torqued. This could result in the caliper bolts loosening, which could lead to the caliper detaching. Insufficiently torqued fasteners may not provide adequate clamping force between the brake caliper and brake anchor plate potentially resulting in reduced brake effectiveness, which would result in increased stopping distances, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Daimler Trucks of North America Service Facilities will inspect the bolts, and repair as necessary.

A failure of this component (brakes) may increase the risk of a crash or injury.

On certain trucks, the steering wheel may not have been installed correctly and could possibly detach from the steering column. This could cause a loss of connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels, resulting in a loss of steering control and creating the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Daimler Trucks North America Authorized Service Facilities will inspect the installation of the steering wheel and repair as necessary.

Certain trucks were equipped with Bridgestone M864, M860A or M854 wide-base tires, size 425/65R22.5, that may not conform to the endurance testing requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 119 - Tires for vehicles other than passenger cars. A manufacturing problem could cause a bulge or blister to be present in the sidewall of the tires. Over time, this could cause deterioration of the tire's structure and lead to a sudden tire failure that may increase the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Authorized Daimler Trucks North America service facilities will replace affected tires.

On certain trucks built with a Cummins X15 or ISX15 engine equipped with nylon fuel lines and a banjo bolt on the fuel pump, a blockage in the fuel cooling system may cause a fuel line to burst. This could result in a significant fuel leak onto the roadway, which would create a road hazard for other motorists. Additionally, this condition could also cause an engine stall without warning, without the ability to restart the engine. Both of these conditions may increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Cummins-authorized dealers will replace the affected nylon line with a steel line.

Certain vehicles may fail to conform to the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 121 - Air Brake Systems and CMVSS 136 - Electronic Stability Control Systems for Heavy Vehicles. When the ignition is cycled off and then on within a few seconds, the Instrument Control Unit (ICU) may not perform the indicator lamp check as required by the standards. This could potentially confuse an inspector who may believe that the ABS or ESC is not functioning correctly should the ignition be cycled too quickly from on-to-off-to-on during a vehicle inspection. Correction: Daimler Trucks of North America Service Facilities will reprogram the ICU. For vehicles with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, the Electronic Control Unit will also be replaced.

On certain vehicles equipped with air disc brakes, the brake caliper mounting bolts may be incorrectly torqued. On certain vehicles, the fasteners securing the airbag module to the steering wheel may not be installed to specification. In the event of crash warranting deployment of the driver's frontal airbag, the airbag may not function correctly, which could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Daimler Trucks of North America Service Facilities will inspect the fasteners and ensure they are tightened to specification.
