On certain school buses, the formed heater hose going to the driver’s heater could rupture allowing hot coolant to leak into the operators foot area. If hot coolant were to come in contact with the operator, it could result in a burn injury and, depending on the driver’s reaction, could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the formed heater hose.

A failure of this component (heater and defroster) may increase the risk of a crash or injury.

On certain school buses equipped with a Ricon S-Series wheelchair lift, the platform could potentially crack due to bent knuckle link arms and/or defective bearing. Overtime, the platform could separate of the rear portion of the pivot plate making the lift inoperable and putting the lift operator at risk of injury. Correction: Owners will need to make an appointment with the local Ricon Dealer to have the lift inspected and repaired.

On certain school buses equipped with a Ricon wheelchair lift, the lift platform sides may crack, which could cause the lift to lean against the vehicle door(s) and potentially fall out of the vehicle when the doors are opened, putting the lift operator at risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect lift platforms for cracks and repair as necessary, and install a repair kit.

Certain school buses fail to conform to Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 222 – School Bus Passenger Seating and Crash Protection. A weld at the base of the barrier (between the right front seat and the entry door) may have been mislocated. As a result, the barrier may not perform as designed during a vehicle crash, which could increase the risk of injury to the seat occupant. Correction: Dealers will replace the barrier frame.

Certain school buses fail to conform to Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 222 – School Bus Passenger Seating and Crash Protection. The seatback material may not meet the leg protection zone impact criteria of the Standard, which could increase the risk of injury during a vehicle crash. Correction: Dealers will install polystyrene blocks in the lower outside corners of each seat (beneath the seat upholstery).

Certain school buses fail to conform to the requirements of CMVSS 217 – Bus Window Retention, Release and Emergency Exits. Specifically, push-out windows and other emergency exits may only be identified using unilingual text, instead of using text in both official languages. In the event of an emergency, this could hamper passenger efforts to quickly exit the vehicle, which could increase the risk of personal injuries. Correction: Dealers will install updated labels.

On certain vehicles, the Injection Pressure Regulator (IPR) electrical wire may break due to vibration damage at the crimp/wire connection. This could cause an unexpected engine shut down without warning. Loss of vehicle propulsion, in conjunction with traffic and road condition, and the driver’s reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will install a redesigned IPR wire connector.

Certain school buses fail to comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 217 - Bus Window Retention, Release and Emergency Exits. Specifically, the force required to operate the emergency roof hatch may exceed the allowable limit. In the event of an emergency, passengers may not be able to quickly exit the bus, which could increase the risk of personal injuries. Correction: Dealers will install a repair kit to update the roof hatch mechanism.

On certain school buses equipped with Bendix ATR-6 Antilock Traction Relay valves, in extremely cold conditions (at or below -18 degrees Celsius), internal ATR valve leakage can occur. This could cause unintended brake application, which could overheat the affected brakes and cause a fire. Also, in certain low traction conditions, unexpected brake application can cause a loss of vehicle control and a crash. These issues could result in property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will update the cover assembly on the ATR valves.
