2014 Jeep Cherokee Recall

On certain vehicles, the tire and loading information label does not list that there is no spare tire in both official languages. The label reads as "NONE" when it should read as "NONE / AUCUN". Canadian regulations require the information to be listed on the label in both English and French.

This error does not affect vehicle safety.

This is not a recall. The company has corrected the tire and loading information label for all new vehicles.

On certain vehicles, water could leak into the power liftgate control module. If this happens, the control module could short circuit.

A short circuit could create a fire risk, even while the vehicle is parked and turned off.

FCA Canada will notify owners by mail. The corrective actions for this recall are under development. FCA Canada advises that you should park your vehicle outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed.

On certain vehicles with a two-speed power transfer unit (PTU), the input splines on the front differential may wear and fail. If this happens, there could be a loss of power to the wheels. In addition, the PARK position may not hold the vehicle in place. This could allow the vehicle to move unexpectedly when parked.

A vehicle that loses power to the wheels or moves unexpectedly could increase the risk of a crash.

FCA will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the software for the power transfer unit. This update will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheels if the input splines fail. It will also prevent the vehicle from moving unexpectedly when transmission is in PARK by activating the parking brake.

This recall is for aftermarket replacement rear window glass produced by Vitro Automotriz. Certain rear window glass may not have been properly tempered. If the window breaks, the glass may separate into large pieces instead of very small ones. Note: This is a voluntary recall that is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Glass that breaks in to large pieces could create a risk of injury.

The company will notify consumers by mail and instruct them to inspect the designation code marked on the rear window glass. Products affected by this recall have the designation “DOT 287” along with the lettering “VMR” (Replacement Market) and a date code that is before July 2019. This information is printed on the bottom corner of the glass. Consumers should contact Vitro's customer service at 1-412-995-6457 or argbacklites@vitro.com to arrange for replacement of the glass.

On certain vehicles equipped with a 3.2 L engine, a transmission fault could cause it to shift into neutral. This could result in a loss of power to the drive wheels.

A loss of power to the drive wheels could increase the risk of a crash.

The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer to update the software for the Transmission Control Module.

On certain vehicles, an electronic fault may create a situation where the cruise control cannot be deactivated. If this occurs and the driver does not apply the brakes or shift the transmission to neutral, the vehicle could maintain speed or accelerate without warning, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software and perform an update as necessary. Note: In the interim, owners are advised not to use the cruise control until the vehicle is repaired.

On certain vehicles equipped with the Roadside Emergency Kit containing a Kidde fire extinguishers with black plastic handles and valves, the fire extinguishers may become clogged or require excessive force to activate. Also, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury, and fail to discharge. In case of fire, failure of the extinguisher to function could result in injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will replace the suspect Kidde fire extinguisher with a new Kidde fire extinguisher with a steel nozzle. On certain vehicles, the first and/or second row seat fasteners may not have been tightened to specification at time of assembly. This could result in squeaks, rattles, deflection or unsatisfactory joint integrity, which could compromise the structural integrity of the seat, potentially increasing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants during a crash. Correction: Dealers will replace the seats or seat sets as necessary.

On certain vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, the transmission wire harness may have improper crimps. This could cause an unexpected shift to neutral which could result in a loss of motive power, which in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions may increase the risk of a crash. Correction: Dealers will update the software of the Transmission Control Module (TCM), and replace the transaxle wire harness as necessary.

On certain vehicles, use of the front wipers on a dry windshield surface could cause an accumulation of static electricity, which could discharge and damage the Body Control Module (BCM) and potentially render the front windshield wiper driver inoperable. A loss of the front windshield wipers may limit the driver’s visibility under certain operating conditions which may increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will add a ground strap from the vehicle body to the front wiper support bracket to protect the BCM from the effects of electro static discharge.

On certain vehicles equipped with a power liftgate, corrosion could occur in the liftgate control module, which could result in an electrical short, potentially resulting in a fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect and repair as necessary.

On certain vehicles, a defect in the Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) system could result in unwanted side curtain and seat airbag deployment in off-road events. Unintended airbag deployment, in a non-warranted (non-impact) situation, could startle the driver, which could result in a vehicle crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will update ORC module software. Note: This recall is an expansion of recall 2015-039.

A failure of this component (airbag) may increase the risk of a crash or injury.

On certain vehicles, the mounting ring loops on rear shock absorbers may fail, allowing one end of the shock absorber to separate from its mounting. This could allow the shock absorber to contact and damage other components such as brake lines and/or tires, which could affect vehicle stability and/or braking performance, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect both rear shock absorbers and replace those found to be suspect.

On certain vehicles, when cruise control is engaged and the accelerator pedal is depressed to override the cruise control, a defect in cruise control software could cause momentary continued acceleration after releasing the accelerator pedal. Depending on traffic and road conditions, and the driver’s reactions, this could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the driver assistance module.
