NOTE: 1971 TO 1987 TRUCKS WITH NEWAY AIR RIDE DRIVE AXLE SUSPENSION. THE CHANNEL TYPE CROSSMEMBER INSTALLED WITH THE SUSPENSION CAN BE OVERSTRESSED AND CAN FAIL. THE BROKEN CROSSMEMBER CAN PROTRUDE ABOVE THE TOP OF THE FRAME AND INTERFERE WITH THE TRAILER CHASSIS COMPONENTS. THIS COULD ADVERSELY AFFECT HANDLING WHEN TURNING. ALSO, A COMPLETELY SEPARATED CROSSMEMBER WITH ATTACHED HEIGHT CONTROL VALVES COULD AFFECT THE HEIGHT OF THE SUSPENSION AIR SPRINGS. THE RESULTING LEAN COULD CAUSE LOSS OF CONTROL.

THE SPRING SEAT, WHICH IS LOCATED BETWEEN THE AXLE HOUSING AND THE REAR SUSPENSION SPRING PACK CAN DEFORM, RESULTING IN REDUCED CLAMPING FORCE IN THE SUSPENSION ASSEMBLY. THIS COULD CAUSE AXLE MISALIGNMENT, SPRING "U" BOLT LOOSENESS AND HOUSING FAILURE. AXLE DISLOCATION, WHICH COULD RESULT IN TIRE TO SPRING INTERFERENCE AND POSSIBLE IMPAIRMENT OF VEHICLE CONTROL, COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.

THE FRONT AXLE AIR BRAKE LINES COULD MELT BECAUSE THEY MAY BE ROUTED LESS THAN THE SPECIFIED DISTANCE FROM THE ENGINE ESHAUST MANIFOLD. MELTED LINES COULD RUPTURE, THEREBY REDUCING AIR PRESSURE TO FRONT AXLE BRAKE CHAMBERS UPON BRAKE APPLICATION. VEHICLE STOPPING DISTANCE WOULD BE INCREASED WITHOUR PRIOR WARNING POSSIBLE RESULTING IN VEHICLE CRASH.

TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH AXLE MOUNTED ROSS HFB 70 INTEGRAL POWER STEERING. THE STEERING GEAR PITMAN ARM BALL STUD MAY LOOSEN OR BREAK IN ITS TAPERED BORE AS A RESULT OF NOT BEING PROPERLY SEATED DURING ASSEMBLY. IF USCH A FAILURE WERE TO OCCUR, LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL AND VEHICLE CRASH COULD RESULT.

THE THROTTLE RETURN SPRINGS PROVIDES LESS THAN THE TORQUES REQUIRED BY CMVSS 124 - ACCELERATOR CONTROL SYSTEMS.

INADEQUATE WELD EMPLACEMENT OF THE SPRING SEAT/RADIUS ROD BRACKET COUPLED WITH RADIUS ROD LOAD AND LOOSENING OF THE SPRING CLIP NUTS COULD CAUSE SPRING SEAT FRACTURE WHICH COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF THE AXLE. THIS COULD LEAD TO LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL WITH A POTENTIAL FOR VEHICLE CRASH.

ENGINE SUPPORT BRACKET MAY DEVELOP CRACKS DUE TO A DEFICIENCY IN MATERIAL PROPERTIES. COMPLETE FRACTURE COULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO DROP DOWN INTO THE RADIATOR, DAMAGING THE SHROUD, ENGINE FAN AND OTHER APPROXIMATE PARTS AND PULL ENGINE THROTTLE INTO FULL GOVERNED POSITION THEREBY IMPAIRING VEHICLE CONTROL.
