2009 Mci D4500 Recall

On certain buses, the wrong glass may have been installed on the lower front entry door panel. As a result, the glass may not meet certain requirements of Canadian regulations.

An incorrect window glass could reduce visibility and increase the risk of a crash.

Motor Coach Industries (MCI) will notify owners by mail and provide you with instructions for how to replace the lower glass panel. Alternatively, you may schedule an appointment to have the lower glass panel replaced at an authorized MCI service center.

Certain coaches previously repaired as part of recall 2012173 may require additional modifications. The power draw from the LED interior lights may exceed the design limits of the fuse block terminal and power splice connector installed as part of the previous recall. As a result, these components could overheat, potentially resulting in a vehicle fire causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: MCI authorized facilities will install a revised fuse holder for the LED interior lights.

On certain coaches, the power draw from the LED interior lights may exceed the design limits of the electrical circuit. This could allow certain components to overheat, which could result in a vehicle fire causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: MCI authorized facilities will modify the electrical circuit for the LED interior lights.

On certain vehicles, specific operating conditions (such as tight, successive, highly banked curves in opposite directions), could trigger unintended Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system intervention. As a result, the ESC may unnecessarily apply one of the front brakes in order to correct the perceived oversteer condition. This may cause the vehicle to deviate from the intended path, thereby increasing the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the ESC module.

On certain vehicles equipped with a Ricon F9 series cassette wheelchair lift, an improperly manufactured switch in the wheelchair lift restraint buckle may allow operation of the lift with the safety belt not fully latched. If the belt is not properly fastened, a wheelchair may not be adequately protected against unwanted movement, resulting a fall risk, potentially causing serious injury or death. Correction: The manufacturer will provide instructional information and warning decals.

On certain vehicles, the Ricon wheelchair lift located in baggage bay #2 could become disengaged from a locked position and slide freely. As a secondary mode of failure, if the wheelchair lift is deployed manually, when the unit is placed back in storage, the drive mechanism may not re-engage properly, allowing the unit to move freely. An unrestrained wheelchair lift may break through the compartment door and extend beyond the outside of the vehicle while in motion, causing potential injury to persons and or damage to other vehicles or property. Correction: The manufacturer/Dealers will install a Ricon-designed retrofit kit.

On certain vehicles, an incorrectly manufactured alternator cable could cause an electrical short. This could result in a vehicle fire causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will replace the alternator cable.

On certain buses, the LED sign, mounted to the side of the bus to display destination message, could suffer electronic circuit board corrosion. This could cause an electrical short circuit, which could result in a fire causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Luminator will replace the electrical circuit connector board.

On certain vehicles, the steer angle sensor -- a component of the electronic stability control (ESC) system -- can fail. This could cause the ESC system to misinterpret data from the yaw rate sensor and the lateral accelerometer as a directional instability requiring intervention by brake activation of a selected wheel. This could occur during low speed turning manoeuvres. Unexpected brake application could result in a vehicle crash causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the steer angle sensor.
