2019 Chevrolet Silverado Recall

This recall is a new notification for owners that purchased a soft or hard tri-fold tonneau cover from a General Motors dealer. On certain trucks, the bed-cover could come loose while driving and detach from the truck. This problem affects soft and hard tri-fold tonneau covers that were sold as an accessory by General Motors dealers. Note: This recall is related to Transport Canada recalls 2019-494 and 2020-165. If your truck was previously repaired under either of those recalls, it does not require further repair under the new recall.

A tonneau cover that separates from a moving vehicle could create a hazard for other drivers and nearby people.

General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer to perform the recall repairs, including adding a tether to prevent the tonneau cover from detaching. Note: Until the recall repairs are completed, you can prevent the chance of the tonneau cover detaching by removing it from your truck and storing it.

This recall affects certain trucks equipped with optional 18", 20", or 22" wheels and tires. The spare tire has a smaller diameter than the tires on the truck. As a result, the antilock brake system (ABS) may not work properly on certain road surfaces when the spare tire is installed on a rear wheel position. This could lead to an increase in stopping distance or a loss of control.

Reduced braking or a loss of control could increase the risk of a crash.

General Motors will notify owners by mail and advise you to bring your truck to a dealer to replace the spare tire and wheel. The dealer will also apply a new spare tire information label over the existing tire label. You will be provided an owner's manual insert that says which spare tire should be used with the wheels and tires on your truck.

On certain vehicles, recall 2021-103 may not have been properly completed. As a result, a second inspection is necessary. Certain vehicles were built with tires that may have been cured too long. As a result, the sidewall could crack or the tread and belts could separate. This could lead to a sudden loss of air pressure and could cause a tire failure. Note: This recall only affects certain Continental tires, with specific date codes and mold numbers. Vehicles subject to this recall were previously inspected under GM recall N212329050 (TC 2021-103) and require subsequent inspection.

On certain trucks, the seat belt brackets for the front-row centre seat may not be properly attached to the seat frame. As a result, the seat belt could detach, and may not work as designed in a crash.

A seat belt that detaches in a crash could create an increased risk of injury.

General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer to inspect the front-row centre seat belt bracket attachments. The dealer will reassemble the brackets correctly, if necessary.

On a small number of trucks, the driveshaft may not have been properly welded. As a result, the driveshaft could break while driving and cause a loss of power to the wheels.

A loss of power to the wheels could increase the risk of a crash.

The company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer to replace the driveshaft.

On certain Silverado LD and Sierra LD models, the bed-cover could come loose while driving and detach from the truck. This problem affects tri-fold tonneau covers that were factory ordered or sold as an accessory. Note: This recall replaces Transport Canada recall 2019-205. Trucks that were repaired under that recall also require this repair.

A tonneau cover that separates from a moving vehicle could create a hazard for other drivers and nearby people.

General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer to replace the tonneau cover rails and clamps. They will also add a tether to prevent the tonneau cover from detaching. For trucks repaired under recall 2019-205, the dealer will confirm that the previous repair was performed correctly. Note: Until the recall repairs are completed, you can prevent the chance of the tonneau cover detaching by removing it from your truck and storing it.

Certain trucks that were repaired under recall 2019-630 (GM #N192268090) received a software update that has an error. As a result, a second repair is required. The software error can cause the following symptoms: if the truck is started remotely using the Onstar mobile app or if an operator enters the truck and waits five or more minutes before starting it, the electronic brake assist could be disabled. This would also cause the ESC (electronic stability control), ABS (antilock brake system) and BRAKE warning lights to turn on.

If the electronic brake assist is disabled, there would be a longer brake pedal travel. This could cause reduced braking and increase the risk of a crash.

General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer to update the Electronic Brake Control Module with the correct software.

On certain vehicles, the electronic stability control (ESC) and antilock brake system (ABS) could turn off due to a software error. If this happens, the vehicle's ESC and ABS warning lights would not turn on.

If a driver is not aware that the ESC and ABS systems are not working, there could be an increased risk of a crash.

General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the Electronic Brake Control Module software.

On certain trucks, the nut that attaches the positive battery cable to the alternator could loosen. This could affect the electrical connection, resulting in an engine stall and/or arcing.

A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Electrical arcing could damage surrounding material and increase the risk of a fire.

General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer to inspect the connection between the positive battery cable and the alternator. If necessary, it will be cleaned and reattached. If the nut, cable or terminal are damaged, the dealer will replace the damaged parts.

On certain trucks, after a crash where a front seat belt pretensioner deploys, the carpet could catch fire.

A fire that occurs after a crash could create an increased risk of injury.

General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to modify the seat belt pretensioner bracket.

Certain truck bed-covers could come loose while driving and detach from the truck. This problem affects tri-fold soft tonneau covers that were factory ordered or sold as an accessory.

A tonneau cover that separates from a moving vehicle could create a hazard for other drivers and nearby people.

The company will notify owners by mail and provide them with improved instructions and labels to explain how the tonneau cover should be installed. An online video will also be available. In addition, the company will provide owners with a tether kit for the cover.

This recall is for aftermarket replacement rear window glass produced by Vitro Automotriz. Certain rear window glass may not have been properly tempered. If the window breaks, the glass may separate into large pieces instead of very small ones. Note: This is a voluntary recall that is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Glass that breaks in to large pieces could create a risk of injury.

The company will notify consumers by mail and instruct them to inspect the designation code marked on the rear window glass. Products affected by this recall have the designation “DOT 287” along with the lettering “VMR” (Replacement Market) and a date code that is before July 2019. On certain vehicles, a retainer ring within the passenger frontal airbag module may have been damaged during the assembly process. This could allow gas to escape during an airbag deployment, reducing the efficiency of the airbag, which would increase the risk of injury to the passenger. Correction: Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag module.

A failure of this component (airbag) may increase the risk of a crash or injury.

Authorized dealerships will inspect the vehicle and complete all necessary repairs free of charge (parts and labor).
