2017 Freightliner Business Class M2 Recall

Certain trucks were built with tires that are not approved for use with the truck's wheels. As a result, the tires may not perform properly, or a tire could fail.

A tire failure could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash.

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail. The corrective actions for this recall are under development. You will be instructed to bring your truck to a DTNA authorized service facility when a repair is available.

On certain trucks, the retaining clip on the transmission oil cooler line may fail. If this happens, the cooler line could detach from the radiator. This can result in a transmission fluid leak.

A transmission fluid leak could create a hazard for others by making the road slippery.

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a DTNA authorized service facility to inspect and repair the transmission fluid cooler lines connections on the radiator tank.

On certain trucks, the engine wire harness could be damaged by contact with various locations around the air compressor and the frame rail. If this happens, the engine could stall and you may not be able to restart it. Note: This recall only affects trucks built with a Detroit DD5 engine.

A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash.

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a DTNA authorized service facility to inspect the clearance between the wire harness and engine, and to check for any damage to the wiring. If the wire harness is damaged, it will be replaced with a new harness that has a severe duty wrap and additional hardware for routing.

On certain trucks equipped with "Fleet Engineer" mud flaps, the bracket for the mud flaps may partially cover the rear reflective tape. Canadian regulations require that reflective tape must be visible on the rear of the truck.

Reflective tape that is covered may make the truck less visible to others and could create an increased risk of a crash.

Daimler Trucks of North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to an authorized DTNA Service Facility to inspect the reflective tape. It will be moved as necessary to meet the regulations.

On certain trucks equipped with electronic stability control (ESC), the brake lights may turn on when the automatic traction control (ATC) activates. Canadian regulations do not allow brake lights to turn on when the automatic traction control activates.

Brake lights that turn on when a vehicle is not slowing could confuse other drivers.

The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their truck to a Daimler Trucks North America authorized service facility. The truck will either be reprogrammed or retrofitted so the brake lights do not turn on when the automatic traction control (ATC) activates.

Certain trucks were built with air reservoir tanks that are too small in relation to the size of the air brake chambers. Canadian regulations require enough air reservoir capacity to ensure the brakes work even with heavy use or when there is a partial loss of the air system.

Reduced braking could cause extended stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash.

The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their truck to a Daimler Trucks North America authorized service facility to modify the truck to ensure it meets Canadian regulations.

On certain vehicles equipped with Kidde fire extinguishers with black plastic handles and valves, the fire extinguishers may become clogged or require excessive force to activate. Also, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury, and fail to discharge. In case of fire, failure of the extinguisher to function could result in injury and/or property damage. Correction: Owners will be provided with instructions on how to inspect the fire extinguisher to see if it is recalled. Replacement fire extinguishers will be supplied by Kidde directly. Certain vehicles equipped with certain instrument clusters may not comply with Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 101 - Controls and Displays and CMVSS 105 - Brake Systems. The ISO symbol for parking brake applied illuminates if there is a brake malfunction instead of the required brake malfunction ISO symbol, which is contrary to the requirements of the standard. If the incorrect ISO symbol is illuminated, the operator may not be aware that there is a brake malfunction that could lead to a reduction or loss of braking, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Daimler Trucks North America-authorized service facilities will replace the dash cluster with a new dash cluster that display the correct brake ISO symbols.

On certain vehicles, the required check valve may not have been installed in one of the ports of the spring brake modulation valve. In the event of a rapid loss of air pressure in the secondary system, the missing check valve could cause a similar rapid loss of pressure in the primary system, which may lead to a sudden application of the parking brakes. This could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Daimler Trucks North America authorized service facilities will inspect and the check valve will be installed if needed.

On certain vehicles outfitted with a dual display instrument cluster option that have the right hand display installed by Fontaine Modification, there could be hardware and software incompatibilities between the two displays. This may result in the the left hand display of the dash cluster to become unresponsive, which could cause a loss of turn signal function. As a result, drivers may not be able to clearly signal their intentions to turn and/or change lanes, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Daimler Trucks North America service facilities will replace the left hand dash cluster with a new cluster that is compatible with the right hand cluster installed by Fontaine Modification.

Certain vehicles equipped with Goodyear G399A LHS LR G tires on the front steering axles, the tires may not have been cured properly during the manufacturing process. This could cause the tires to have incomplete adhesion, which could lead to partial tread separation and/or tire failure. If the tread were to separate while a vehicle is in motion, it could cause a loss of vehicle control, which would increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Goodyear dealers will inspect and replace the tires as necessary.

On certain vehicles equipped with Meritor disc brakes, the brake caliper mounting bolts may be incorrectly torqued. This could result in the caliper bolts loosening, which could lead to the caliper detaching. Insufficiently torqued fasteners may not provide adequate clamping force between the brake caliper and brake anchor plate potentially resulting in reduced brake effectiveness, which would result in increased stopping distances, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect the bolts, and repair as necessary.

On certain vehicles, the specified front axle weight limit may be greater than the hub capacity. If the axle load exceeds the maximum weight capacity of the hub, there is an increased risk of hub fatigue, which could cause a complete separation of the wheel(s) and a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the incorrectly specified front axle hubs.
