2018 International Lt Recall

On certain trucks, the backup lamps could be blocked and may not be visible. As a result, the trucks don't meet the requirements of the Canadian regulations. Note: This recall only affects trucks equipped with a pintle hook lowering bracket and feature code 01WPN, 01 WPS, or 01VAL.

Backup lamps that aren't visible could cause a person not to recognize that the vehicle is backing and increase the risk of a crash.

Navistar will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealership to install new tail stop/turn signal lamps with integrated backup lamps.

On certain trucks, the connecting rod bushings could fail due to a manufacturing defect. This could cause an engine failure that can result in a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart. Note: This is an expansion of recall 21505 (Transport Canada Recall 2021-240).

A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, a stalled vehicle could also increase the risk of crash.

Navistar will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer install a detection system to warn a driver if there is a problem with the connecting rod bushing. The system will cause a red engine warning light to turn on if a problem is detected, before a connecting rod failure happens. Engines found with a suspect connecting rod will be repaired.

On certain trucks, the battery ground cables that connect to the vehicle frame could overheat. If this happens, the battery post could separate and cause a loss of electrical power. As a result, the engine could shut off suddenly.

Overheated battery ground cables could create a burn risk. A loss of power while driving could increase the risk of a crash.

Navistar will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealership to replace the alternator positive and ground cables. The dealer will also reroute the alternator ground connection from the frame rail to the starter.

On certain trucks, the ring terminal that attaches the battery ground cable to the frame may break. If this happens, there could be a loss of electrical power and the engine could shut off suddenly.

A loss of power while driving could increase the risk of a crash.

On certain vehicles, the exhaust hanger brackets may crack and allow the tail pipe to separate from the vehicle.

If the exhaust tail pipe falls off, it could become a hazard for road users and bystanders. This could create a risk of injury and/or a crash.

The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the rear exhaust hanger bracket replaced. Dealers will also inspect and replace any forward bracket found cracked and/or tail pipe that is damaged.

On certain vehicles equipped with an electronic clutch actuator (ECA), the clutch may have been manufactured improperly and could fail. If this occurs, the broken clutch components could prevent the transmission from disengaging or shifting to neutral. This could result in unintended vehicle movement, even if the parking brake is applied, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will recalibrate the Transmission Control Module (TCM).

Certain vehicles may fail to comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 108 - Lighting System and Retroreflective Devices. The vehicles may have been equipped with a right headlamp assembly that is improperly marked. If the headlamp requires realignment, a service technician may align the assembly incorrectly due to the improper marking. This could reduce a driver’s night time visibility, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Truck-Lite will mail a corrected right headlamp assembly label to current owners with instructions for proper placement.

On certain trucks built with a Cummins X15 or ISX15 engine equipped with nylon fuel lines and a banjo bolt on the fuel pump, a blockage in the fuel cooling system may cause a fuel line to burst. This could result in a significant fuel leak onto the roadway, which would create a road hazard for other motorists. Additionally, this condition could also cause an engine stall without warning, without the ability to restart the engine. Both of these conditions may increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Cummins-authorized dealers will replace the affected nylon line with a steel line.

On certain commercial trucks, a fuel line could contact the air compressor discharge line. Heat from the compressor discharge line could damage the fuel line, causing a fuel leak which, in the presence of an ignition source, could increase the risk of fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the straight fitting on the air compressor outlet with a 45 degree fitting and install a redesigned air compressor discharge line.

On certain vehicles, the seat belt D-ring mounting bolts may break due to a material defect. If this occurs, the seat belt may not properly restrain the seat occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect the driver and passenger D-ring mounting bolts and replace them as necessary.

A failure of this component (seats and restraints) may increase the risk of a crash or injury.

On certain vehicles, when the hood is closed, the fender splash panel may rub on the inlet fuel line fitting of the fuel/water separator. This could result in abrasion damage to the fuel line fitting causing a fuel leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will trim the splash panel to allow proper clearance and replace the fuel/water separator inlet fitting if abrasion damage is found.

On certain vehicles equipped with Cummins ISX 15 engines and certain fuel pumps, the drive gear on the fuel pump may spin loose on the drive shaft. This could result in a loss of pumping function, which could result in an engine stall without warning and not being able to be restarted, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Cummins-authorized dealers will replace the fuel pump.

On certain vehicles, the air dryer mounting bracket may fracture and cause the air dryer to separate the frame. This could potentially cause the air lines to separate from the dryer resulting in an air system leak or loss of air pressure to the brake system, which would increase stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the air dryer mounting bracket with an updated heavy duty bracket.

A failure of this component (brakes) may increase the risk of a crash or injury.

Certain vehicles equipped with LED headlights may fail to comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 - Lighting System and Retroreflective Devices. When the light switch is in the park/marker position, the daytime running lamps do not illuminate, which is contrary to the requirements of the standard. Correction: Dealers will recalibrate the body control module.
