2016 Western Star 4900 Recall

Certain trucks were built with tires that are not approved for use with the truck's wheels. As a result, the tires may not perform properly, or a tire could fail.

A tire failure could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash.

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail. The corrective actions for this recall are under development. You will be instructed to bring your truck to a DTNA authorized service facility when a repair is available.

On certain trucks, the strut-rod for the sleeper cab vent windows may not be properly attached. This could cause the vent window to over rotate and detach from the vehicle.

A window that separates from a moving vehicle could create a hazard for other drivers and nearby people.

The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a Daimler Trucks of North America authorized service facility to replace the vent windows.

Certain trucks were built with air reservoir tanks that are too small in relation to the size of the air brake chambers. Canadian regulations require enough air reservoir capacity to ensure the brakes work even with heavy use or when there is a partial loss of the air system.

Reduced braking could cause extended stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash.

The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their truck to a Daimler Trucks North America authorized service facility to modify the truck to ensure it meets Canadian regulations.

Certain vehicles built with front disc brakes and a Lomax hood may not have enough clearance between the hood and the front brake hose. This could cause chafing of the brake hose, which could lead to an air leak resulting in reduced brake effectiveness and increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Authorized dealers will replace the front brake hose. Note: A leaking front brake hose may not be detectable during a routine pre-trip inspection.

On certain vehicles equipped with Kidde fire extinguishers with black plastic handles and valves, the fire extinguishers may become clogged or require excessive force to activate. Also, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury, and fail to discharge. In case of fire, failure of the extinguisher to function could result in injury and/or property damage. Correction: Owners will be provided with instructions on how to inspect the fire extinguisher to see if it is recalled. Replacement fire extinguishers will be supplied by Kidde directly. On certain vehicles with air brakes, after several hard brake applications, the brake light pressure switch may not activate the brake lights with a light application of the brake pedal. If the brake lights do not illuminate, following road users would be unaware of the intent of the driver to slow the vehicle, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Daimler Trucks North America authorized service facilities will repair the brake light pressure switch.

On certain vehicles, the castellated nut and cotter pin on the steer axle may not have been tightened to specification. This could cause the tie rod to become loose in the steer axle, which would result in audible noise and/or looseness in steering. If the vehicle were continued to be operated in this condition, the tie rod could disconnect from the knuckle, resulting in a complete loss of control of a vehicle wheel, which would increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Daimler Trucks North America authorized service facilities will inspect the torque of the castellated nuts on the tie rod, and replace the tie rod stud and knuckle as necessary.

On certain vehicles outfitted with triple compartment aluminium air tanks, the end caps of the tanks may have received incomplete welds during manufacturing. If a weld were to separate on the tanks, it would result in a rapid loss of air pressure, which could cause reduced brake performance, or unexpected application of the parking brakes, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the affected tanks with triple compartment steel air tanks.

On certain vehicles equipped with a Stratosphere sleeper cab, a seat belt mount failed during testing due to an incorrect diameter hole on the seat belt anchor plate. If this condition is present, the seat belt may not properly restrain the occupant in the event of a crash, which could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will reinforce the seat belt anchor plate.

On certain trucks equipped with Marmon-Herrington driven front axles, flange yoke fasteners were not tightened to specification. This could allow the driveshaft to become disconnected from the axle, potentially resulting in injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect bolts and tighten or replace as necessary.

On certain vehicles, the Engine Control Module (ECM) may develop an internal electrical short circuit that could blow a fuse in the ECM's electrical supply circuit. This could cause the engine to stall without warning and prevent the vehicle from being restarted. Engine stalling would result in lost propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the ECM.

Certain vehicles may not comply with Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS 101) – Location and Identification of Controls and Displays. These vehicles may have been manufactured with an odometer displaying imperial measurements instead of metric. Correction: Dealers will install a new speedometer with a metric odometer and the correct software.
