2013 RAM 1500 Recall

On certain trucks equipped with a power locking tailgate, the tailgate may open while driving. If this occurs, cargo that is not secured could fall out of the truck bed and onto the road. Note: This is an expansion of recall U74 (Transport Canada recall 2018-398).

Cargo that falls from the truck bed could create a road hazard for others.

The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their truck to a dealer to modify the tailgate locking mechanism. Note: This recall supersedes recall 2019-221

This recall is for aftermarket replacement rear window glass produced by Vitro Automotriz. Certain rear window glass may not have been properly tempered. If the window breaks, the glass may separate into large pieces instead of very small ones. Note: This is a voluntary recall that is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Glass that breaks in to large pieces could create a risk of injury.

The company will notify consumers by mail and instruct them to inspect the designation code marked on the rear window glass. Products affected by this recall have the designation “DOT 287” along with the lettering “VMR” (Replacement Market) and a date code that is before July 2019. This information is printed on the bottom corner of the glass. Consumers should contact Vitro's customer service at 1-412-995-6457 or argbacklites@vitro.com to arrange for replacement of the glass.

On certain vehicles equipped with a steering column gear shifter, the brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) may become inoperative. This could allow the steering column gear shifter lever to be shifted out of the PARK (P) position without depressing the service brake pedal or having the key in the ignition, which could result in unintended vehicle movement, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect and replace the BTSI as necessary. The Body Control Module (BCM) will also be updated.

On certain vehicles equipped with Occupant Restraint Controllers (“ORC”) with roll rate sensing, under certain external conditions, a fault may be set relating to rollover sensing that will illuminate the airbag warning light and disable rollover sensing until the vehicle is restarted. A loss of airbags and seatbelt pretensioner deployment when warranted during a rollover crash may increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the ORC.

Correction: FCA Canada will notify owners who may have purchased the Mopar Canvas Seat Covers, and advise them to remove the covers and return them for a refund.

On certain 4-door pickup vehicles, the software in Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) module may contain side impact calibrations that are overly sensitive. This could result in unintended deployment of the Side Airbag Inflatable Curtain (SABIC), seat airbag, and/or seatbelt pre-tensioner during certain driving conditions, which could startle the driver and result in a vehicle crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will update the ORC module calibration.

On certain vehicles equipped with Electronic Vehicle Information Centers, the steering wheel wiring harness may wear against the driver frontal airbag retainer spring, potentially resulting in an electrical short which could cause unintended driver frontal airbag deployment. Unintended airbag deployment, in a non-warranted (non-impact) situation, could result in injury and increase the risk of a vehicle crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will secure the wiring harness and add protective caps to the retainer spring.

On certain Dodge Charger, Chrysler 300 all-wheel drive vehicles and RAM 1500 four wheel drive vehicles equipped with 8 speed automatic transmissions, the transmission output shaft could fail. If this were to occur while the vehicle is being driven, it could result in a loss of motive power. If this were to occur while the vehicle is parked without the parking brake applied, it could result in unintended vehicle movement. Both situations could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will replace the transmission in affected vehicles.

On certain four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles, the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) module was incorrectly configured during the manufacturing process. This could cause a loss of ESC function and trigger the ESC warning lamp to illuminate. Loss of ESC could increase the risk of a crash, which may result in property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the ESC module with updated software.

Certain vehicles may not comply with Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 101 - Controls and Displays and CMVSS 105 - Brake Systems. The brake malfunction/parking brake indicator may display the word "BRAKE" instead of the required symbol. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the instrument cluster in affected vehicles.

Certain vehicles may not comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 - Lighting and Retroreflective Devices. The vehicles may not give notification of a turn signal malfunction, as is required by the standard. The absence of notification of a turn signal malfunction could, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and driver reactions, increase the risk of a crash causing personal injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will reconfigure the central body controller.

On certain vehicles, the coolant bypass valve may stick in a position that does not allow coolant flow to the heater core. Loss of windshield defrosting and defogging functions may, under certain driving conditions, compromise the driver’s ability to see the road and its users, which could result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the coolant bypass valve, and reprogram the powertrain control module with updated software.

On certain vehicles, the parking brake equalizer may have been adjusted incorrectly during vehicle assembly. This could result in reduced effectiveness of the parking brake system. Should the vehicle be parked on a sufficient slope, this could allow unintended vehicle movement, which could cause a crash resulting in property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, re-adjust the parking brake equalizer.

Certain pickup trucks may not comply with Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 - Lighting System and Retroreflective Devices. Due to an error in the configuration of the vehicle, the Daytime Running Light (DRL) system was not enabled. No DRL illumination could render the vehicle less visible to other motorists and pedestrians during daylight hours, which could result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will update the DRL configuration on affected vehicles.
