On certain school buses equipped with Kidde fire extinguishers with black plastic handles and valves, the fire extinguishers may become clogged or require excessive force to activate. Also, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury, and fail to discharge. In case of fire, failure of the extinguisher to function could result in injury and/or property damage. Correction: Owners will be provided with instructions on how to inspect the fire extinguisher to see if it is recalled. Replacement fire extinguishers will be supplied by Kidde directly. On certain buses built with a wheelchair pocket track, the anchorage of the pocket track may not meet anchorage specifications. In the event of of crash, occupants may be at an increased the risk of injury. Correction: Daimler Trucks North America authorized service facilities will install additional fasteners to the wheelchair pocket track to reinforce the anchorage.

On certain school buses equipped with a Ricon wheelchair lift, the lift platform sides may crack, which could cause the lift to lean against the vehicle door(s) and potentially fall out of the vehicle when the doors are opened, putting the lift operator at risk of injury. Correction: Ricon Corporation repair facilities will inspect lift platforms, link arms and bearings for cracks, damage or misalignment and if found to be damaged, link arms and/or platform will be replaced. Note: This recall supersedes recall 2014-330. Vehicles repaired under the previous recall will require re-inspection and potential repair.

Certain school buses may not comply with Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 - Lighting System and Retroreflective Devices. The Daytime Running Lights (DRL) may not illuminate when the master lighting switch is set to the parking lamps position. No DRL illumination could render the vehicle less visible to other motorists and pedestrians during daylight hours, which could result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will update the DRL configuration on affected vehicles.

On certain school buses, the fuel line (between the fuel/water separator and the engine) may contact the hydraulic brake lines, causing abrasion damage which could result in a brake fluid leak. On certain school buses, the power cable connection (behind the driver’s side kick panel) may corrode and cause an electrical fault or short circuit. This could result in a vehicle fire causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Owners will be advised to inspect their vehicle for corrosion in the area of the power terminals and, if excessive corrosion is found, to take the vehicle to an authorized repair facility to have the corrosion removed and the studs and cables replaced.

Certain vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 120 - Tire Selection and Rims. The vehicle certification label incorrectly lists tire load range "D", but instead should read load range "E". As a result, the vehicle may inadvertently be fitted with incorrect replacement tires. Overloaded tires may lead to poor vehicle handling characteristics, which could result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the labels.

On certain vehicles equipped with a Carrier GenV EM-1 evaporator unit, the blower motor fuse assembly may allow the fuse to loosen over time, which could result in high resistance and arcing. If sufficient arcing occurs the fuse holder may melt, which could cause smoke and/or fire. A vehicle fire could result in property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Carrier will provide a retrofit kit along with installation instructions.

On certain vehicles equipped with an MBE900 (EPA04 and EPA07) engine, the intake air grid heater may short circuit and fail. This could result in a vehicle fire causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will install an additional external relay to prevent battery connection to the grid heater when the vehicle is not running and when grid heater control signal is absent.

On certain vehicles, the stop lamps may operate intermittently during light braking applications. On certain vehicles, the adjustable brake pedal arm may loosen, rotate around its shaft, and swing in front of the accelerator pedal. Should the brake pedal arm contact and engage the accelerator pedal, it could result in extended stopping distances and a vehicle crash causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will install a C-clamp assembly to the brake pedal arm.

On certain buses, passenger clothing (drawstrings, straps, etc.) could become caught as the passenger exits the front door of the bus. If this happens and goes unnoticed by the driver before he/she pulls away, the passenger could be dragged by the bus, causing serious injury or death. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if required, relocate the handrail.

On certain buses, contacts in the pressure switch for the low current brake lamp signal to the chassis Electronic Control Unit (ECU) may become contaminated by the presence of silicone used during assembly. Over time insulating deposits may build up on the contacts and affect the operation of the brake lamp signal to the chassis ECU, thereby preventing brake lamp illumination. Failure to clearly indicate intentions to following motorists could result in a vehicle crash causing injuries or death. Correction: Dealers will replace the pressure switch "A" module in the Air Management Unit (AMU).

On certain vehicles, incorrect spindle nuts may have been installed during vehicle assembly. This could cause incorrect end play, cone spin, excessive heat, degradation of lubrication, wear of the spindle nut and bearing journal, oil contamination with metal shavings, and premature bearing failure. Continued operation could lead to wheel separation, which could result in a vehicle crash. As well, this situation creates the risk that nearby bystanders or motorists be struck by a wayward wheel assembly. Either of these concerns could cause property damage, personal injury, or death. Correction: Dealers will affect repairs.

On certain school buses, the rear emergency exit exterior door handle may be severely weakened over time by corrosion. In the event of an emergency, a person on the outside of the bus may break the door handle trying to open the emergency exit, potentially delaying evacuation and increasing the risk of personal injury to the vehicle's occupants. Correction: Dealers will replace the aluminium handles with more robust versions.

On certain school buses equipped with Braun platform lifts, a passenger can approach the exposed lift doorway without the audible alarm alerting them of their proximity to the threshold. Should the threshold warning system fail to operate, the lift user can fall from the vehicle and be seriously injured. Correction: Owners will be provided with inspection and retrofit instructions. Note: Further evaluation revealed that only U.S. vehicles are involved.

Certain school buses fail to comply with the requirements of CMVSS 217 - Bus Window Retention, Release and Emergency Exits. Retroreflective tape was not installed around the perimeter of the roof mounted emergency exit hatch. Improperly identified emergency exits may hinder evacuation efforts. Correction: Dealers will install retroreflective tape. Note: Further evaluation revealed that only U.S. vehicles are involved.

On certain vehicles, the fasteners that attach the steering arm or tie rod arm to the spindle may have been over or under tightened during assembly process. Incorrectly torqued steering arm fasteners may fatigue and fracture, possibly causing a crash without warning. Correction: Dealers will inspect fasteners and apply correct tightening torque.

On certain vehicles, the internal rubber check valve inside the Bendix SR-7 spring brake modulating valve can become deformed over time. The effect of this defect is intermittent and presents a potential delay or failure in applying the parking brakes; potentially resulting in a vehicle roll away. Should this occur, the unattended roll away vehicle could strike a bystander or cause property damage. Correction: Dealers will install a check valve repair kit.

On certain school buses, fasteners used to secure the fuel fill tube mounting bracket to the bus floor may be missing or improperly installed. As a result, fuel spillage could occur during or after a vehicle crash. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire. Correction: Dealers will inspect to ensure proper installation of the fuel fill tube mounting bracket. Missing or incorrectly installed fasteners will be replaced.

On certain school buses, the warning lights may stop functioning unexpectedly if the front entrance door closes without driver's input. Failure of the warning lights to remain on during the loading or unloading process may encourage motorists to pass the school bus, placing students at risk of being struck and possibly resulting in injury or death. Correction: Dealers will affect repairs.

On certain vehicles, a manufacturing error with the double-check valve module used in controls for the park brake interlock on school bus chassis or in the optional M2 work brake may affect vehicle braking capabilities. On vehicles with park brake interlock controls, the double-check valve may release air from the service and parking brakes when service brake is applied. On vehicles with work brakes, the work brake may not hold depending on weight, slope and air leak rate, or the stop lamps may intermittently not come on when the service brake pedal is applied. Correction: Dealers will replace the double-check valve module.
