Safety recall notices and repair campaigns registered for the 2020 Thomas Built Saf-T-Liner C2 School Bus in Canada.
On certain school buses, the letters on the instruction labels for the emergency exits are too small. This could make it difficult to read the label. Canadian regulations require a minimum size for the letters.
Instructions for an emergency exit that are difficult to read could delay persons from exiting the bus in an emergency and increase the risk of injury.
Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your school bus to a DTNA authorized service facility to increase the height of the letters on the instruction labels.
On certain school buses, the fasteners for the rear emergency exit door latch could loosen and detach. If this happens, and the door is pushed, it could open suddenly.
An emergency exit door that opens suddenly could increase the risk of injuries.
Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail. The corrective actions for this recall are under development. DTNA recommends that you should contact them immediately if you notice any missing bolts during your daily pre-trip inspection.
On a small number of school buses, there may be a software problem with the engine control module. As a result, the engine power may not be reduced when certain safety systems activate, like the traction control system or collision avoidance system. Note: This recall only affects buses equipped with a Cummins B6.7N natural gas engine.
Safety systems that do not work properly could increase the risk of a crash.
Cummins will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your bus to a Cummins authorized service center to update the engine control module software.
On certain school buses, a software problem could cause the exterior warning lights to stop flashing. If this happens, the red warning lights can turn off suddenly. The stop sign and crossing arm will also retract. Note for drivers: If this happens, the system indicator light will turn off. A driver can press the momentary activation switch to turn the warning lights back on and deploy the stop sign.
If the warning lights stop flashing and the stop sign retracts, other drivers may assume that it is safe to proceed when it is not. This could increase the risk of injury.
Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your bus to a DTNA authorized service facility to update the software in the switch hub module.
On certain school buses built with a Detroit Diesel DD5 engine, the bolts that attach the engine cooling fan could loosen. If this happens, the fan could detach and/or cause damage to nearby parts. This could disable the school bus.
A bus that is disabled could result in an evacuation in an uncontrolled environment, which may create a risk of injury.
Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their bus to a DTNA authorized service facility to inspect and repair the fan hub fasteners, as required.
This recall affects certain school buses equipped with SynTec S3B and/or S3C passenger seats. On some seats, the protective foam in certain areas of the seatback may not meet the knee impact requirements of Canadian regulations.
A seatback that does not have proper knee impact protection could increase the risk of injury to occupants in a crash.
The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a Daimler Trucks of North America authorized service facility to install additional protective material in the seatbacks.
On certain school buses, the outer handle for the roof hatch (emergency exit) could break. If this happens, it would be difficult to open the roof hatch from outside the bus.
An emergency exit that is difficult to open could increase the risk of injury in an emergency.
The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a Daimler Trucks North America authorized service facility to replace the roof hatch outer handle.
On certain school buses, if a short circuit or overload were to occur on the auxiliary port circuit, it could blow the fuse for the ignition circuit. This could result an engine stall without the ability to restart, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Daimler Trucks of North America Authorized Service Facilities will modify vehicle wiring to ensure that the power port circuit does not affect the ignition circuit.
A failure of this component (electrical) may increase the risk of a crash or injury.
Authorized dealerships will inspect the vehicle and complete all necessary repairs free of charge (parts and labor).
